700 years

Estate remains in the ownership of the McDouall family for more than 700 years with the exception of a couple of decades when the estate was owned by Olaf Hambro from 1949 to 1970. At this time some of the garden, including the walled garden was gifted to Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and became Logan Botanic Gardens

1500

The original medieval castle and documents we believe were destroyed by fire in the 15th century the remains of the castle can be seen in the walled garden at Logan Botanic Garden

1504

In 1504 a new charter was obtained by Patrick McDouall which stated that the lands had been held by the McDouall’s “beyond the memory of man”

1702

1952

1874 house was remodelled by David Bryce who shrouded it with extensive Baronial additions which were removed in 1952 with the exception of the service wing which remains today.

Lovely cottage situated in a quiet location, with a good sized garden outside. Bigger inside than the photos. It had everything we needed. Our dogs also loved their stay. Lots of great beaches in easy travel distance. We will definitely recommend it to our friends and family.

Spent 2 days here to get away for peace and quiet. Cottage was fabulous, immaculate and soo much space. Had everything we needed, including complementary tray of goodies. The estate remote but seeing the wildlife was amazing, pheasants squirrels deer and a hare! Loved the log burner perfect for a cold night. Bed and bedding was great quality literally slept like a log. If you looking for peace and quite, short drives to explore the area eg Stranraer, Port Logan etc it’s the perfect location. We loved our stay.

We had a lovely stay here during our Christmas break. The cottage was very comfortable, cozy, and well equipped. Evenings by the fireplace were wonderful. The area is beautiful, quiet, and peaceful, we enjoyed watching the stars at night and spotting pheasants and squirrels during the day. The hosts were very helpful and welcoming. There are also many beautiful places by the sea nearby to explore. We would definitely recommend this place!

Wow! What a fantastic weekend. The cottage gave us the perfect place to explore the local area. We loved the peace and tranquility of the cottage. We've been lighthouse hunting, beach exploring and sunset chasing. The cottage is beautifully presented with everything you could need and Laura popped down to say 'Hello' and introduce herself. The attention to detail in the cottage could be seen in every room. One of the highlights of the weekend was the local wildlife. We regularly met deer and pheasants as we entered and exited the Estate but the standout moment surely has to be watching the little red squirrels playing freely on the Estate. What an absolute gem of a place, we have loved every minute of The Rhins of Galloway.
